RPC and Competitive Edge Inc. (CEI) collaborated on the design and configuration of a very complex multi-level solution, with unique functional and technical challenges. The client required differentiation between the master schedule and sub-schedules. Only the master schedule is aligned between SAP and Primavera, while the detailed schedules are automatically derived and aligned in Primavera only. At the same time, unsupported instances of P6 were upgraded to a single supported instance.

Approach

SAP Integration

Following a series of design workshops a proof of concept (PoC) was modelled and transported via a development environment through to production.

The high-level process starts in SAP, where highlevel WBS structures and networks are established for budgeting and to act as a master schedule. The process included…

  • Transfer of the SAP master data structure to Primavera. Generic work centre-level resource assignments on the master schedule level, individual resource assignments on the level of the detailed schedules.
  • Interaction between Detailed Schedules and Master Schedules in Primavera, and the Master Schedules in Primavera and SAP.
  • Transfer of work centre and HR master records from SAP to Primavera, including hierarchical resource structures.
  • P6 to P6 integration to force consistent integration between a master schedule and detailed subschedules

Data Migration

To ensure all projects were consistent with the new coding structures, an exercise to both cleanse and update existing data was undertaken. Many hundreds of projects were migrated and at the same time a comprehensive housekeeping exercise substantially reduced the amount of redundant data.

P6 Upgrade

A parallel stream involved the technical installation and configuration of a fresh install of P6 and, once tested, the design configuration was applied. Further User Acceptance Testing (UAT) was carried out to test that the business rules adhered to the business process.

Training

Following a detailed training needs analysis, a bespoke, process led, training programme was created using a mixture of traditional instructor led training and use of Oracle UPK (User Productivity Kit). Training was delivered to circa 500 users.

Main Challenges

  • Extensive process changes, particularly relating to Primavera
  • Multi-level schedules in Primavera to be established and aligned automatically
  • Specific requirement for dealing with security aspects
  • Complex requirements for aligning multi-level resource libraries and related hierarchies

Benefits

  • Fully supported single P6 instance with central PMO administrative control
  • Automated SAP Work Centre and P6 Resource Hierarchy synchronisation
  • Common coding standards
  • Consistent platform for future testing and development
